Following the success of the pre-tests which we have held over the last few years, we will be running another one this summer. If your child is planning to sit the entrance exam for North Halifax or Crossley Heath this year, then help them to overcome exam nerves by entering them for an 11+ pre-test.

Bookings are now being taken. Details on how to book a place can be found at the bottom of the page.

11+ Pre-Test, Halifax

My personal background
I have been a primary school teacher for over 20 years and I am also a private tutor. I have been fully DBS checked.  In 2012, the parents of the children I was tutoring were disappointed to discover that the grammar schools were no longer holding their usual Pre-Test.  Therefore, I decided to hold one myself.  I am pleased to say that it was a success and so we have run a mock 11+ exam every year since, accommodating hundreds of children.

The Test Date
Sunday 30th June 2019. This date has been chosen as we do not want to hold the test during the school summer holidays since this would exclude children who may be on holiday.  To hold the test after the summer holiday would mean that there is very little time left before the entrance exam for children who scored low marks to work at improving their scores.

The Time
To accommodate as many children as possible, we will hold the exam twice throughout the day. There will be a morning exam from 9.00 - 12.00 and an afternoon exam from 12.30 - 3.30.

The Venue
This year the exam will take place at Shelf Village Hall, Halifax Road, Shelf, HX3 7NT. (Previously, this test has been held at both The Shay and Shelf Village Hall.)

The Tests
We aim to replicate the Grammar Schools’ entrance exam as closely as possible. Therefore, this year’s mock 11+ test will consist of:

a) A test in English which will include a comprehension and a piece of writing, lasting 60 minutes.

b) A Maths test which will be in a ‘multiple choice’ format, lasting 30 minutes.

c) A Verbal Reasoning test which will be in a ‘multiple choice’ format, lasting 30 minutes.

The length of each test will reflect the length of the tests used in the actual entrance exam.
All papers have been specially written to ensure children have never seen the questions before.

  The Results
We will report your child’s score back in the same format the Grammar Schools used when they   reported their own official pre-test results. Therefore, you will be sent your child’s standardised   scores for English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning as well as his/her total score. Scores will be age   weighted (as they have been previously in the Grammar Schools' own entrance exam.) You will   also be given the range of scores for all the candidates who have taken this test which will be   broken down into:
  - Highest scoring 25%
  - 25% to 50%
  - 50% to 75%
  - Lowest scoring 25%

Furthermore, we will compare your child's score with previous standards in the grammar schools' admission test; this will allow us to state how likely he/she would be to gain a grammar school place, should he/she produce a similar score in the Grammar Schools' own test.

No further feedback will be given, as was the case in the Grammar Schools’ own Pre-tests.

Results will be emailed to you within 14 days of taking the test.

The cost

Why take the pre-test?
Sitting the Grammar Schools' entrance exam naturally proves highly stressful for many children (and parents!) If your child has had previous experience of sitting an exam in an unfamiliar environment, this can help them gain in confidence. Many parents of children who have sat our exam have reported that it was a very valuable experience. Here are just a few of their comments:
